MPO loopback module for troubleshooting fiber networks

MPO loopback modules are widely used in test environments, especially in parallel optical 100G networks. The device allows verification and testing of optical modules with MPO interfaces – 100GBASE-SR10 CXP/CFP modules. The MPO loopback module is widely used to connect the transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX) ports of the MPO optical module interface. It can facilitate and accelerate IL testing of optical network segments by connecting them to MPO trunk/jumper leads. OMC has been providing MPO loopback module since 2007, it’s popular among our clients due to its high quality and performance. Below is a detailed introduction about the loopback to help you understand it better.

What is MPO Loopback?

MPO loopback is a passive optical device including an MPO loopback patch cable, which can pass both ends of the optical fiber into an MPO connector to achieve the optical path in the same connector, with no need to change the signal or repeat the signal back to itself. Usually, there is a black cover on the outside for protection.

MPO loopbacks can be classified from the following aspects

1. Core number

MPO loopbacks can be divided into different types such as 8cores, 12cores, 16cores, and 24cores according to the number of cores. These different types of MPO loopbacks can meet the needs of networks with different densities and speeds. For example, 12cores MPO fiber patch cords are used in 40G networks, and 24cores MPO fiber patch cables are used in 100G networks.

2. Polarity classification

MPO loopbacks can be divided into Type A (straight-through), Type B (interleaved), and Type C (paired interleaved) according to different polarities. These different polarity configurations allow for correct signal transmission in different application scenarios.

3. Loss classification

MPO loopbacks can also be divided into two types: low loss and normal loss according to different losses to meet different transmission distances and signal quality requirements.

4. Fiber type classification

MPO loopbacks can be divided into single-mode and multi-mode according to the type of fiber used to meet different transmission medium requirements. For single mode, usually the color will be green, multimode, the color can be purple, aqua, beige, yellow, etc. What’s more, OMC can offer customized services for different colors.

What’s the function of MPO loopback

MPO loopback is mainly used for fiber loopback testing, where signals are sent from a communication device and returned to the device to check whether the device is working well. They are often used to check whether a fiber optic transceiver is functioning properly as designed. There are two ports for transeiver, one is sending signals and another one is receiving signals. MPO loopback provide a quick and efficient way to test the transmission capability and receiving sensitivity of optical network equipment and locate various potential anomalies. MPO loopbacks with different core counts have different polarity channel alignment configurations. For example, an 8cores MPO loopback is usually aligned at both ends of the connector, leaving the 4 channels in the middle empty. MPO loopbacks are suitable for 40/100G network communications, and can locate various potential phenomena through return signals, thereby achieving effective testing and evaluation of individual components or interfaces and networks on paired optical networks.
